"For as long as I can remember, I have suffered with knee pain. I genuinely thought I would have it forever. That’s until I found RAPID! Mike was a true professional, I found his approach to helping my knee pain amazing and something I hadn’t experienced before. Mike put me through the correct exercises to help build strength in my knee and most importantly keep it pain free. I continue to do these at home and in the gym. He walked me through everything and made sure I completed the exercises correctly. I can’t recommend RAPID enough"
"I first went to RAPID with a tear in my right MCL.Within five minutes of our first meeting, Mike’s reassuring nature and professionalism made me feel I was in the right hands. He gave me a structured program to complete with gym and running exercises tailored to my progress which I have improved on each week. I could not recommend RAPID enough and have heard of countless people with similar views to me. The best physio in Dublin!"
"Highly recommend RAPID to anyone looking for a highly knowledgeable, thorough physiotherapist. Mike is the best as he looks at the root cause of pain / weakness and he is passionate about creating a clear plan to reach your goal. After a knee injury & surgery, I went to Mike to get back to running as 5 months post surgery, I still didn’t have the confidence to run again. Mike set a clear plan and I saw a huge difference immediately. I can now run again without feeling nervous which is amazing. I cannot recommend RAPID enough."
"I went to RAPID after experiencing recurring knee issues for several months. Mike was nothing but professional from the get go. He made me feel at ease. His approach to treating me was something I have never experienced before. Throughly unique. He had no interest doing the usual practices for short term results. He got to the root of my knee discomfort and set me up with an exceptional workout plan which was easy to follow! He broke down each movement for me and explained why I needed it to help strengthen up the week area! I am now completely pain free thanks to Mike!"
"I have been going to RAPID for physio after having ACL reconstructive surgery. From the start Mike has been supportive and always willing to answer any questions I have. My knee is progressing so well, the structured approach Mike uses and the way he demonstrates exercises really helps. I know I’ll be in safe hands when returning back to sport!"
"I went to RAPID for three weeks over a patella tendon issue I picked up during rugby preseason. From our first session, Mike was approachable and very professional. He issued tailored programmes at the end of each session while going into great detail and explaining all the exercises. I am back playing pain free, I could not recommend RAPID enough!"
"Highly recommend RAPID. Mike got me back to training within a few sessions. I had previously been to other physios to rehab my knee post surgery, without fixing the issues. I wish I had gone to RAPID sooner. Thanks again."
"Struggling with knee pain and related difficulty walking. Mike came up with a programme that’s immediately improved mobility and increased my strength and overall fitness. After 3 months, I am pain free, stronger, fitter and have increased confidence. I would (and have done) highly recommend RAPID to anyone. Mike's programs were delivered in such a way to totally engage and encourage me. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thank you Mike"
"I attended RAPID after being diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis requiring a total knee replacement. I was shocked with this diagnosis as I am still quite active at 51- playing golf, cycling & swimming. My pain occurs after 9 holes of golf or walking more than 3km & I would require a few days of rest & painkillers if I completed 18holes. Mike completed a thorough assessment & developed a strengthening program for musculature around both knees. After only 1 month of completing his Level 1 exercises I have had amazing improvements. I am completing 18 holes of golf without the need for pain killers & after 1 evenings rest I could play again. I am continuing to work with Mike to improve strength further & delay the major knee surgery for a few years. Mike is very professional & approachable in manner and clearly explains his diagnosis and programme of exercises. I would highly recommend Mike at RAPID for all of your rehab or strengthening needs."
"Mike is a fantastic physio with superb knowledge and expertise on all aspects of rehabilitation and performance. I went to RAPID following an ACL surgery. Mike put me on a programme tailored specifically for me that ensured I was able to address my weak points and help rebuild my knee so that it was left feeling stronger than it was prior to my injury. His approach of blending strength, rehab and plyometric work together ensured that all the bases were covered in my recuperation. If you have any sort of physical issue, Mike can get you on the path to recovery immediately!"
The knee is one of the most commonly injured joints in the body. It is hugely important to the normal function of our everyday lives, such as walking, getting out of a chair and going up and down stairs. I is also vital during sport and activities like running, cycling and jumping. Knee pain is one of the most common injuries which we see here at RAPID.
Knee Pain can be simply split into acute knee pain and chronic knee pain.
Acute knee pain normally has a clear moment of injury, such as a fall, a twist or an impact. There may have been a snap or a pop and pain was likely immediate after this incident. There may have been swelling and bruising. It might have been very difficult to walk and put weight on the leg after the injury. These types of injuries can be quite debilitating and it is important to get them assessed as soon as possible in order to find out what structures are involved (muscle, tendon, bone, ligament, meniscus) and what the recovery journey will be like.
Chronic knee pain usually has no one clear moment of onset. It normally comes on slowly and progressively gets worse over the subsequent days, weeks, months and sometimes even years! This pain often occurs after starting a new activity (such as walking, running, tennis or the gym) or following a period of heavy manual work (gardening, moving house). This pain can be quite debilitating as well, and often a combination of rest, anti inflammatories and pain killers may have been unsuccessful. You may have put it down to, or been told that, it is the result of wear and tear or of an old injury. You may think that it is something that you will have to live with for the rest of your life. You may think that you need an injection or an operation. At RAPID we often see patients who have had chronic knee pain for a long time, have seen multiple professionals in the past without success and go on to make a full recovery with our expert assessment and rehabilitation.
Symptoms of Knee Injury
The most common symptom of knee pain which we see at RAPID is pain when bending the knee, especially with weight on it. This can make everyday activities difficult such as getting up from a chair, walking down stairs / an incline and doing a squat. Here are some of the other common symptoms which we see
- Pain bending the knee back.
- Pain straightening the knee fully.
- Pain getting up from a chair or sitting down to a chair.
- Pain up and down stairs or a hill.
- Pain kneeling down.
- Pain sitting for long periods such as driving, on a flight or at the office.
- Pain walking or running.
- Pain squatting, lunging or picking things up.
- Pain jumping and landing or changing direction during sport.
The pain may be at the front, the back or the sides of your knee. It may travel down the shin or up the thigh. At RAPID we strive to find the Root Cause of your knee pain and not just treat the symptoms.
