Knee Rehabilitation
Your Knee Feels Better. But It Doesn't Feel Right.
Whether your knee injury happened recently or it's been frustrating you for months, knowing what to do next isn't always straightforward.
Maybe the pain and swelling have only just settled. Maybe you're still limping, avoiding stairs, or unsure how much you should be pushing it. Or maybe you've already tried rest, exercises, or even surgery, and your knee still doesn't feel fully right.
Many people find themselves stuck somewhere between "improved" and "fully recovered." In most cases, the issue isn't just pain, it's that the knee hasn't been properly assessed, progressively strengthened, or rebuilt to handle the demands of real life.
With the right structure and the right support, recovery becomes far more predictable.

Is This The Right Page For You?
Shane works with a genuinely wide range of knee conditions, and the people who come to see him are just as varied. Some are in their sixties recovering from a knee replacement and just want to walk the dog without dreading it. Others are in their thirties coming back from a ligament injury and want to get back playing. What they all have in common is a knee that's holding them back from living the way they want to, and a need for a clear, structured plan that's actually built around them.
This may be the right place for you if:
- You've had a knee replacement and want to get back to walking, climbing stairs, and moving freely without pain
- You're preparing for knee surgery and want to go in as strong as possible to speed up your recovery
- You've had a knee ligament injury (ACL, PCL, LCL, MCL), meniscal tear, or sports-related knee trauma and want a clear, structured path back to activity
- Your knee has been painful for months and the standard advice - rest and see - isn't working
- Your knee feels improved, but you can't trust it on stairs, uneven ground, or during exercise
- You're an athlete or active person who wants to return to sport, training, or competition safely and with confidence
If any of that sounds familiar... you're in the right place!
Meet Shane McAuliffe
Specialist Knee Physiotherapist | Dublin
Shane Mc Auliffe is a Chartered Physiotherapist on the RAPID team with a specialist interest in knee rehabilitation and a clinical background that gives him a depth of experience most people never get to work with.
Before joining the RAPID team, Shane spent two years at the Sports Surgery Clinic in Santry (one of Ireland's leading orthopaedic settings) where he worked across the full patient pathway for knee conditions. That included pre-operative preparation, post-surgical rehabilitation, ligament and meniscal injuries, and close collaboration with orthopaedic consultants, sports medicine physicians, and clinical specialists phystiotherapists.
In that time, Shane worked with close to 2,000 knee replacement cases. That's a lot of knees, and a lot of very different people, each with their own story, their own goals, and their own version of what 'getting back to normal' looks like.
That experience gave him something that goes beyond clinical knowledge, a real understanding of what patients go through, what they worry about, and what they actually need to hear to stay motivated through recovery.
Shane also works with the GAA community and has a genuine passion for helping athletes at all levels get back to the sport they love.
Whether your goal is to get up from the couch without wincing, walk the dog without dreading the stairs, or get back on the pitch, Shane builds a plan that's designed around you.
How Does Knee Rehabilitation Work at RAPID?
The RAPID Knee Rehabilitation Framework is a structured, stage-by-stage approach to rebuilding knee function, from initial assessment and pain management through to full return to sport or daily activity.
What Does Real Knee Recovery Actually Feel Like?
Pain often improves before the knee is fully ready.
It's one of the most common reasons knee rehab stalls: people feel better, reduce their exercises, and then find the pain creeps back in. Not because they did anything wrong, but because the knee hadn't yet rebuilt the capacity to handle real life.
Real recovery takes time. Small flare-ups along the way are normal, and they don't mean damage, that's really important feedback. Progress isn't always linear, and sometimes stepping back briefly is part of moving forward.
What makes the difference is having a structured, progressive plan and someone who can help you read those signals correctly, so you stay consistent instead of stopping and starting.
That's exactly what we do at RAPID.Â
